10 TIPS ON RENTING A CAR FOR A ROADTRIP THAT WILL SAVE YOU SERIOUS CASH

3. Read the fine print of the contract. With some rental companies, they do not give you unlimited mileage. You must make sure you are getting the unlimited miles (as most companies will give you.) Also, sometimes they say you can not take the car into certain states, so make sure before you sign a contract, you are not going to get charged extra for driving across state lines. And don’t be too sure that you can get away with it. With GPS and car tracking, you may get caught red handed.

4. Although it’s more expensive, I love the one-way rental. Not only do you save on one leg of the plane ride, but you can be more creative with where you go. But, if you do a one way rental, shop around from company to company. Alamo and National tend to give cheaper rates for one-way drop offs of cars. But that all depends where you pick it up and where you drop it off. One time we wanted a trip to end in Nashville, and then fly home to New York. But the drop off rate was way cheaper in New York than Tennessee, so we decided to save on the flight back, and just drive it home. There are some helpful travel sites, such as www.kayak.com, which will give you a sampling of what different companies will offer you. Change around the cities. You may find it a large benefit to drop it off in Nashville, instead of Knoxville. An investment of a half a tank of gas, could save you hundreds of dollars.
