The Monroe Doctrine, 1823

With fears that Spain wanted to reclaim Latin America after the independence movements of Simon Bolivar, the US instituted this doctrine to keep prospective colonizers out of their backyard. The only reason the US could enforce this doctrine to nations who were stronger than them, was because England had their backs.
