THE REMAINS OF MARIA TERESA AND THE HAPSBURGS

THIS WAS FREAKY! Underneath St. Stephen's Cathedral are the crypts. However, it's only some bodies, and the organs of some others! Yes, somewhere in this church (which we were not allowed to take pictures of) are bottles of organs marinating in formaldehyde. They are labeled with numbers, corresponding to whose bowels, hearts, and livers they are. Then, a half a mile down the road -- you can see the bodies on display. Could you imagine if Abraham Lincoln's body was in Springfield, but his heart was in the Smithsonian? Culture shock to say the least!

On the left, the tomb of Maria Theresa. On the right, the tomb of Maximilian I, dethroned by the Americans.

Franz Ferdinand is not buried in the crypts, but this memorial is on the wall.
