Grant the Butcher ... Ulysses S. Grant had a great advantage over Robert E. Lee during the Civil War, because the North had industry, capital, and more soldiers to offer. Knowing this, Grant threw untrained infantry at the Confederacy. The result was massive Union casualties, but by sheer numbers, Grant would chase down Lee. For this strategy, Grant became known as a "butcher."
