Question:
How Rome's
early Republic function? (scroll down for
answer)
Answer: A
republic
is a type of government where the citizens vote for leaders to
represent them. A similar type of government is present in the
modern day United States. The Roman republic was comprised of:
1.
Patricians
- The aristocracy, or rich property owners who had the most power.
2.
Plebeians - Commoners such as merchants and farmers.
They were not allowed to hold high office. Eventually, in the Roman
Senate, they became elected officials called tribunes.
3. Senate - Controlled by the aristocracy, this strong legislative
group experienced life-terms. As mentioned above, plebeians
eventually received a voice here.
4. Dictators - The Roman Republic was allowed to appoint a dictator,
or absolute ruler, to govern in times of war or conflict.
5.
Twelve Tables of Law
- These were written laws that expressed individual rights within
the Republic. They were displayed at the Roman Forum (meeting
center) so all could see them.
