Definition: Apartheid in South Africa, 1948-1994

England controlled South Africa since the end of the Boer War. Given self-rule, the Republic of South Africa's white National Party members and Afrikaners (Dutch descendants) discriminated against black African rights. Apartheid (notice the word apart) was a separation of the majority black population from the minority white race. The entire country was segregated for nearly 50 years.
