Question: Of that really, really, really old stuff...what do I need to know? (scroll down for answer)

Answer:

1. In the 1970s an archaeologist named Mary Leakey found the oldest prehistoric footprints in Africa. This human creature was called australopithecines.

2. Early people were nomadic, or wandering tribes. Specifically in the Middle East, the term Bedouin will be used.

3. Many people were hunters and gatherers. Men typically hunted while women gathered berries, roots, and other plants.

4. Slash-and-burn farming meant that people cleared land for farms by burning trees. The ashes were then used as fertilizer. These same people domesticated many animals, or learned to train them into creatures that could help with the farming process. Such techniques would be instrumental in the Neolithic Revolution (explained next).
