Definition: Aung San Suu Kyi

In Myanmar (formerly called Burma), the military ruled through dictatorship. Aung San Suu Kyi was instrumental in a nonviolent protest movement for democracy and human rights. Despite winning the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, she spent over a decade as a political prisoner. After being freed in 2010, she won a parliament seat in 2012. Denied holding the presidency, in 2016 she gained some executive power with the title of state counselor.

Kyi faced global backlash in 2019, as she refuted allegations that the military persecuted Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim population. However, evidence pointed towards brutal human rights violations. Instability followed, and a military coup led to her arrest in 2021.
