Definition: Jacksonian Democracy

This was the belief that government should represent and be controlled by the common man. It was similar to Jefferson’s belief in political equality. With few exceptions, Jacksonian Democrats controlled the White House until the Civil War.

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French political writer who visited and wrote about life in the United States. In 1835, he authored Democracy in America, in which he observed the equality and liberty being experienced by American citizens in the age of Jacksonian Democracy. He also commented on the importance of Christianity in the lives of the American people.
