The Nile is the longest river in the world (though some consider the Amazon in South America to be longer). Every year the Nile floods and leaves behind fertile soil. This natural event led to the rise of civilization on the land known as the Nile Delta.  Irrigation, or the transportation and application of water to places far from the source, was accomplished to bring water away from the Nile.
