Definition: Deng Xiaoping and the Four Modernizations

Today, China is a leading industrial power in the world. However, until about 1980, it lagged behind. Deng Xiaoping helped get the ball rolling on massive industrializations with a program called the Four Modernizations. Inheriting this policy from a decade before, he set new goals for agriculture, industry, and technology. Small businesses were permitted to operate, and with their profits, people began to purchase consumer goods. By 2000, China became an industrial giant, and the fastest growing economy in the world.
