Question: How might candidates at the state level stray from the national party platform?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

State and national political parties can differ. For example, in traditional blue (liberal Democrat) states such as New York and New Jersey, Republican leaders have supported liberal issues such as same-sex marriage and gun control. Locally, this can be advantageous. A Presidential candidate, however, would be less successful in deviating from the party platform.
