Question: How might special interests affect who is appointed to the Supreme Court?

Answer: Because justices are appointed for life, and there are only 9 of them, the selection is a big deal. Usually the appointee will have a similar ideology, or be of the same political party, as the President. In addition, it can also be someone who is universally liked and will easily be confirmed by the Senate.
